I've had a solid build over the past 5 months leading into the event and felt fit, healthy and ready to tackle 'Ironman Cairns'.
With a strong pro field line up, my goals was not focused about racing others but racing myself, sticking to my race plan, giving it my heart and soul and enjoying every moment of it! :-)
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been tweaking the set-up of my new Cevelo P4 and by race day my bike finally felt dialed-in at last and ready to rip! The new carbon 3T bars have made a huge difference (from my old alloy bars on the P2) and with some bar adjustments has resulted in an improved set up overall from my old P2 (including no back/shoulder pain). A very special mention to Gavin (Echelonsports) and Sean (Bike Addiction), these guys have been absolutely fantastic in helping me work through the bike set-up and making the time for the necessary bar adjustments only days before flying up to Cairns - a huge thank you for your support. My P4 felt awesome the entire ride and I'd have to say it was one of the best 180km rides I’ve had with the changes above and my body felt in much better shape to run off the bike.
The last 5kms I gave it everything left in the tank and I’d have to say this was probably the highlight of the day, coming home soaking up the community and volunteer support, seeing my friends and my husband bring my race home to the finish line with a marathon split of 3hrs.21 (3rd fastest run split of the day). I had absolutely no idea what my overall ironman split was likely to be until turning that last corner to the finish chute - seeing 9hrs.39mins was a pretty ecstatic moment...
I feel I've turned a corner with my ironman racing and the experience represents a platform to build and further develop my potential as an athlete. I love the challenges of this sport, you learn so much with every experience and can't wait to see what more I can give.
Thank you so much to my sponsors - High 5, Eyeline, Saltstick, Skinfit, Compressport, PowerBreathe, Bike Addiction, ISM and TriShave - for your on-going support, I'm incredibly lucky to have you behind me. To my coach Gilesy - as they say, 'onwards and upwards', a solid race, looking forward to the season ahead and love working with you mate. A very special thank you to Nige, friends and family for your amazing support - I received so many special messages of good luck leading into this event - your words mean a lot and were definitely at the front of my mind during those tough stages throughout the race.
Bring on Challenge Roth - the ultimate & my absolute favourite race ever!!! :-)
