Before any race, I prepare a race plan which includes pacing, nutrition & mind-set strategies specific for each event (Ironman is a long day!). I also like to write down 5 positive thoughts to set the scene & focus:
Trust myself - believe, challenge and commit.
3. I grew up in a small rural community 'Kentucky' (near Armidale) and Lake Cathie/Port Macquarie was where my grandparents use to live so there are lots of childhood memories of our family going on holidays to this beautiful coastal region of NSW. I now live in Sydney and its a straight forward 4-5 hour trip and I'm familiar with the course having raced in Port Macquarie (half & ironman distance) many times before - keep things simple and automatic Bec!
4. Looking forward to racing amongst the local community and soaking up the atmosphere.
5. Its a strength course given the hilly coastal terrain which suits my strengths.
"BE A HARD BUGGER". This course suits you, "know it"!
1. The Port Macquarie/Hastings community, volunteer support, our family and friends and local triathlon clubs (including members from my local club Warringah Triathlon Club :-) supporting the athletes throughout the race course! The sideline support from Port Macquarie to Camden Haven was fantastic throughout the entire day. I love to engage with the community when racing especially on the bike, it gives me a lot of positive energy and love to give back to spectators supporting the event, where I can.
One aspect of this progression I have kept consistent throughout is working with my coach Grant Giles, Aeromax. I have been working with Gilesy since starting the sport in 2006 who has had a huge influence on my growth as a person and athlete and we've grown as a team. Gilesy's coaching philosophy works with my lifestyle and just basic hard work has got me to where I am today - a massive thank you mate, love working with you, challenging my goals in the sport and living my passion in life!
I would also like to mention my support team who I closely work with on a regular basis - Paul Penna/Focus Performance Psychology, Daryl Phillips/Performance Health Newport, Mick Smith/Massage Therapist, Kira Sutherland/Urberhealth, Jon Bell/Bell Leisure, Darryl Griffiths/Shotz Nutrition.
And the amazing support from my sponsors who make a significant contribution to my training and racing environment - Specialized/Cyclery Northside, Skinfit, Eyeline, Compressport, Everest Sports (SaltStick/KineticbyKurt), TriShave and Team Latitude.
Thank you to Geoff Myer, David Ray, Ken Baggs, USM/IM Asia Pacific and all staff involved as well as the event partners which support this event. There is a huge amount of work behind the scenes to make this event possible and its fantastic news that Ironman Australia and the history and tradition behind this event will stay for another 5 year period.
I feel all areas of swim bike and run as well as my nutrition plan are continually improving and feel I'm in a good space moving forward as my season continues forward.
I've received so many amazing messages of support and encouragement, it really means at lot and wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone :-) I feel incredibly lucky to have such a supportive community behind me. Looking forward to seeing you again at the races soon, Cheers Bec xo
