I had a relatively good recovery from Mandurah and was keen to see how my body was going to respond with another race hit-out a week later as well as continue working on my race fitness.
The swim course consisted of a deep water start and a one lap loop northbound in Hastings River Channel, alongside Pelican Island. The pro girls split early with Kat, Belinda, Kiyomi and Jodie leading the field.
Happy to be out of the water, the bike course ahead involved 2 x 45km laps to Lake Cathie, consisting of hills, rollers and flats. I put the hammer down the first lap, moving my position up the field as best I could and within @45-50kms I had positioned myself with Britta and Belinda for the second lap. Kat was having an absolute BLINDER on the bike out the front, pulling further and further away, showing off her phenomenal bike talent :-) The 2nd lap back into town was a hard push, wind was picking up and another dose of Port Mac hills draining energy reserves. Mathew Flinders Hill was a complete disaster as I didn't change down to the small chain ring soon enough - then the chain got stuck, speed slowed down, then I got stuck!!! Next thing I know I'm PUSHING my bike up the hill - shocker! I lost the girls at that point, colourful language at its best, then needed to re-group and focus on my hydration and fuel rolling back into town.
Kat started her run with a huge lead off the bike, Britta took off like a rocket with Belinda and I following from behind. Kiyomi and Kristy were also in the background - both good runners. Finally my run legs came together and I could start to push my speed and rhythm. I moved my way into 3rd place fairly early, lots of coke, water, another SaltStick tablet, a gel...more water to keep hydrated...and I was able to hold my pace fairly consistently which was my goal. Through the course of the second lap, Britta had run down Kat and taken the lead. Coming back into town from Settlement Point, I ran myself into 2nd place and continued forward, focusing on holding it together to the finish line.
To finish 2nd at Port Macquarie 70.3 with my family and Nige sharing the race experience with me, was definitely a highlight to the year. I just loved being out there amongst it on Sunday - Port Mac definitely has a special triathlon spirit. The weekend was a great opportunity and experience to race amongst a talented bunch of pro girls who pushed my limits and potential to get the most out of myself. Congratulations to Britta on the win, fantastic effort mate! A super pocket rocket with a lot to give to the sport. Port Mac 70.3 is not an easy course, well done to all competitors who took up the challenge with multiple great races and results in both pro and age group fields.
Time to re-group and focus on a solid block of training for Busso IM to finish off the year! :-)
Thank you to everyone - my sponsors (High 5, SaltStick, Skinfit, Compressport, Bike Addiction, TriShave, Eyeline, ISM, Team Latitude) coach Gilesy, friends and family for all your words of encouragement and support xo
